Shands Arts in Medicine competes for LIVESTRONG grant

Shands' Arts in Medicine program is competing for a grant from the LIVESTRONG Foundation.

The program is one of 51 in the running for the Creative Center at University Settlement, which has been offered by LIVESTRONG since 1994 and provides free weekly art workshops to cancer survivors, according to the LIVESTRONG website.

Since its inception, the program has raised more than $500 million to support cancer survivors. Shands is competing for one of 72 grants totaling $1.2 million, according to the website.

Shands is in the running with seven other programs in its region.

Rossana Passaniti, media relations coordinator at Shands, said one of the programs at Shands of Jacksonville is also eligible for a LIVESTRONG grant.

She said today is the last day for voting online.

Votes can be cast at www.vote.livestrong.org.

Shands was in third place as of Wednesday, according to the Gainesville Sun.

Winners will be announced April 15  for each of the programs offered by the LIVESTRONG Community Impact Project.
