Pope Benedict XVI will begin posting tweets from @pontifex in mid-December

The papacy is coming soon to a Twitter near you.

“The pope’s presence on Twitter can be seen as the ‘tip of the iceberg’ that is the church’s presence in the world of new media,” the Vatican said in a statement, according to the New York Times.

“He won’t follow anyone for now,” said Greg Burke, a former Fox News correspondent in Rome who was named a Vatican communications adviser. “He will be followed.”

His first post will be a reply to questions about matters of the faith from Twitter users who use #askpontifex, a hashtag that has become a source of comedy or rude comments more than actual questions.
