Homecoming weekend will begin with the Gator Gallop and Homecoming Parade Friday.
The event generates ample garbage and waste. City workers will be putting trash cans along the parade's route starting in the morning and will be collecting trash throughout the day to keep the streets as clean as possible.
Steve Joplin, Gainesville's solid waste manager, said he expects more trash this year than in 2011.
"Last year, we had a little drizzling rain before the parade, and I think that limited turnout a little bit," Joplin said. "Since the weather's good this year, I would expect to probably have a lot of people and a lot of trash."
Joplin also said he hopes people will throw their trash into containers instead of littering. It will be the University of Florida's 89th year of having the parade. More than 100,000 usually participate in the event.
