Hernando County hosts volunteer workday

Volunteer Workday

Volunteers in Hernando County will be picking up their gloves and tools this Saturday to help clean up the Lake Townsend Preserve.

The event is part of the county's Environmentally Sensitive Lands Volunteer Workdays program to clean and maintain important nature areas.

Hernando County Community Relations Coordinator Brenda Frazier said taking care of the land is important to the area.

"Hernando County is known for its eco-tourism, and that's what brings people to this community, because of these open spaces... areas that have not been developed, and it's important to sustain those areas in our community."

A non-binding referendum on whether or not to continue the program and the one-tenth of one mill tax that funds it will appear on the Hernando County ballot Tuesday.
