Update, 12:55 p.m.: The driver of the motorcycle, 22-year-old Andreas Dinopoulos, was pronounced dead at UF Health Shands Hospital shortly after this morning's accident, according to Gainesville police.

Dinopoulos, a former University of Florida student, was traveling east on Archer Road when his motorcycle struck the rear wheel of a box truck that was turning left onto Newell Drive, according to a news release from Gainesville police.

A university police officer witnessed the crash and was able to respond to the accident immediately, along with medical professionals from the hospital. Dinopoulos was wearing a helmet, but his injuries proved fatal.

Archer Road was reopened at 11:41 a.m. Gainesville police will launch a full traffic homicide investigation, the release said.

Original story: Closures on the westbound side of Southwest Archer Road are expected until 11:30 a.m. today because of a wreck involving a motorcycle, Gainesville police spokesman Ben Tobias said.

The eastbound side was also affected and was shut down to one lane, Tobias said.

Further details haven't yet been released, but WUFT will provide them as they become available.
