Open house on Seahorse Key this Saturday

Seahorse Key is a tiny island off of the coast of Florida near Cedar Key. In addition to a U-F Marine Lab, Seahorse Key is a nesting ground for Florida’s brown pelicans. As Erica Cordell reports, for the third time this year, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will hold an open house on Seahorse Island for the public on Saturday (July 10th).

This flowering ghost orchid, or Dendrophylax lindenii, has successfully been transferred to the butterfly rainforest at the Florida Museum of Natural History. The transfer included stapling burlap with the orchid attached, to a piece of wood. The burlap will biodegrade eventually and the orchid will grow into the wood, according to Michael Kane.
