The Point, Jan. 14, 2022: One major Florida city hasn't had curbside recycling for months

Subscribe to The Point to invite us into your inbox with the most important Florida news from Monday through Friday at 8 a.m.

Today's top Florida stories

• WJCT: Curbside recycling won't return anytime soon, and people are furious. "When Jacksonville ended recycling pickup in October, the city gave tentative estimates that it could be half a year before it would be able to resume curbside service. That might have been optimistic."

• Mainstreet Daily News: Newberry events filled more hotels than UF in 2021. "Richard Blalock, CEO and president of RADDSPORTS, and manager of the 16-field Champions Park, presented the numbers to the Newberry Commission at Tuesday night's meeting. According to Blalock, Champions Park hosted 23 weekend and multi-day events involving 1,029 teams."

• WLRN: Climate change is driving tiger sharks further north. There's a lesson here about how fishing rules work. "The shift means the voracious scavengers are spending more time outside restricted fishing zones from Florida to North Carolina, where they are protected from the commercial fishing industry. That leaves them even more vulnerable to fishing practices driving down their numbers."

• Florida Politics: Numbers align for lotto winner anonymity in House committee. "Florida law already makes the address and phone number of winners confidential. The proposal would allow those who win $250,000 or more to keep their names confidential for 90 days, though they would be allowed to waive that right also."

• Tallahassee Democrat ($): Tallahassee Starbucks becomes first location in Florida to organize, file for union election. "This election filing comes less than a month after a location in Buffalo, New York, led the first successful attempt at unionizing within the giant coffee chain — an effort that's motivated other locations around the country to organize."

• WMFE: Flip flops. Check. Sunscreen. Check. Starting today you’ll also need a vaccine to board a Disney cruise. "The new vaccine mandate for all domestic and international passengers took effect on Thursday. Anyone who is five years of age and up must be fully vaccinated and submit proof of vaccination on the Disney Safe Passage website."

• WUSF: ‘Focus on hope’: How a marine biologist teaches youth about Florida’s changing climate. "Kathy Guindon, the director of the Suncoast Youth Conservation Center, uses her passion for the ocean to teach and encourage children to become future stewards of the environment in order to combat climate change."
