Sheriff’s deputies arrested a husband and wife Tuesday after authorities said they found 10 starving, dirty dogs without water in their backyard. The State Attorney’s Office in Alachua County filed 10 counts of aggravated animal cruelty and two counts of fighting or baiting animals – all felonies – against the couple.

A Levy County middle and high school shut down on Wednesday after the school’s staff feared two students had come into contact with fentanyl in the school’s bathroom. One student was taken to the hospital and arrested, and the other student was treated and released to their parent. Today, several other students reported feeling sick and school activities were briefly put on hold while an investigation unfolded. A white powdery substance was found in the bathroom with the two students on Wednesday and was confirmed to be methamphetamine with no trace of fentanyl. The students who reported feeling ill had flu-like symptoms and school activities were resumed by 10 a.m. Attorney General Ashley Moody also announced in a press release the launch of a new webpage, One Pill Can Kill, which aims to warn Floridians about the dangers of fentanyl.

A grand jury on Monday indicted 35-year-old Michael Gregory Davis of Gainesville on charges of premeditated murder in the death of Calvin Leon Woodard Jr. Davis will face arraignment and trial at a later date. Alachua County Sheriff’s officers responded to reports of a man shot at an apartment complex near the Oaks Mall in June. Deputies found Woodard at the scene with a gunshot wound to the chest. He later died from his injury. Davis also had his phone privileges revoked at the Alachua County jail due to an open felony obstruction of justice case, in which he attempted to tell witnesses from the homicide investigation to retract their statements. Davis is scheduled for case management on Nov. 15 for the premeditated murder of Woodard.

Antwine Johnson, a 32-year-old Gainesville man, attended a short hearing Wednesday before Judge Phillip Pena for his felony cases involving an alleged kidnapping and rape. On Sept. 20, 2021, Johnson allegedly kidnapped and attempted to sexually assault a woman jogging on the side of the road. The same morning, he dragged a woman from her front doorstep, beat her behind bushes, raped her and stole her phone, leaving her unable to call for help. Later the same morning, he is accused of felony battery of his girlfriend. Johnson was arrested soon after and has been held in jail since. Johnson will appear in court again next week for misdemeanor charges for disobeying the judge’s orders not to contact any of the alleged victims when he tried sending a postcard to his girlfriend. Johnson will appear for a case management hearing on Oct. 26 for the charges of kidnapping, battery and rape.

Authorities in Alachua County are on the scene of a small plane crash. Witnesses and authorities said the small, single-engine plane with only the pilot aboard crashed and flipped in a flooded ditch of a farm northeast of Gainesville Regional Airport.
