• NPR News: Florida's Governor Says School Leaders May Have Salary Withheld If They Require Masks. "As the majority of Florida's K-12 schools prepare to reopen campuses at full capacity this week — many of them on Tuesday — Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the State Board of Education could withhold pay from school leaders who implement mask mandates for students."
• Tallahassee Democrat ($): 'Things went sideways': Leon Schools superintendent announces mask mandate for K-8 students. "'At the end of the day, something happened and things went sideways ... Heaven forbid we lost a child to this virus, I can't just blame the governor,' he said, noting that the responsibility for the decision is 'on me.'"
• USA Today Network ($): As kids return to school, most Florida counties report COVID cases four times higher than last year. "Cases among children are surging too, raising questions about the health consequences of students returning to campuses and a state ban on school mask mandates while vaccines are available for only some of the schoolchildren."
• Gainesville Sun ($): Tom Petty festival in Gainesville may be canceled due to COVID-19 pandemic. "Several commissioners and city staff have raised concerns about the potential for Full Moon River Festival event, slated to bring an estimated 6,000 people a day to Depot Park on Oct. 23 and Oct. 24, becoming a super spreader."
• CBS Miami: Miami Condo Deemed Unsafe, Residents Scramble To Evacuate. "Residents of the condo, at 5050 NW 7th Street, were given until 8 a.m. Tuesday to be out. The building has structural issues and the building’s engineer had been working with the city to make the needed repairs. They had about 45 days to correct the issues but the building’s engineer and staff were not able to correct those issues in time."
• New Service of Florida: St. Johns County School District Fights Transgender Bathroom Ruling. "The Northeast Florida school district last week filed a motion for a rehearing after a divided panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in July said a policy preventing Drew Adams from using boys’ bathrooms was 'arbitrary' and violated equal protection rights."
• WTSP-Tampa: Ocala police welcome new K-9 named after chief killed in plane crash. "K-9 Graham was named after the late Police Chief Greg Graham. Graham died in a plane crash in 2020 after being with the agency for 37 years – the last eight as chief."
