Stay warm and stay safe with the changing seasons

Before flipping on your space heater for relief from the cold, Gainesville Fire Rescue has a few tips to keep you safe. GFR District Chief Richard Salusberry says all heating devices should be thoroughly cleaned before getting fired up.

He says space heaters are one of the most common causes of fire this time of year.

He says they need to have a lot of clear space around them and be closely monitored. With holiday decorations around most homes this time of year, Salusberry says to also watch any potentially flammable lights and keep other decorations away from sources of heat.
