A University of Florida-owned observatory in Levy County may be forced to shut down due to a new sand mine to be constructed about 500 feet away.

The new sand mine will generate light pollution, dust and vibrations that will interfere with Rosemary Hill.

Observatory sensitive instruments, dust from the sand mine will require the observatory's telescope mirrors to be cleaned about five times a year.
