Construction began yesterday on a new Alachua County elementary school.

Alachua County Public Schools Superintendent Karen Clarke says the school on Parker Road is needed to alleviate overcrowding.

“This is Elementary School I," Clarke said, "It hasn’t been named yet, but over the past few years as we’ve looked at capacity and enrollment figures in Alachua County for elementary students. The state actually a long time ago said that we had the demand for a new school to serve our elementary students because so many of our elementary schools were over capacity.”

The project will cost 25.5 million dollars and is expected to be completed in August of 2021.

Clarke says the school is just under the budget they are allowed from the state.

The elementary school is expected to have a capacity of 900 students.
