Newberry considers adding museum to explain some of its complex history

Newberry might be getting a new historical society and museum to commemorate the town's complicated history.

Mayor Jordan Marlowe is drafting the resolution, which he'll bring to the town commission next month.

The idea for a Newberry historic society has been in the works for years. Newberry Mayor Jordan Marlowe began considering it when the town worked with the Equal Justice Initiative in 2018 to acknowledge the racial history of the town.

Together, they put up historical markers to honor the memories of the victims of Newberry’s 1916 lynchings.
