Elections for the City of Gainesville are coming up next month, and Monday is the last opportunity for local residents to register to vote.

Attempting to make voter registration list maintenance more transparent, Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner announced Wednesday “Project Integrity,” a series of discussions among election supervisors in October across the state.

The Florida House of Representatives passed a bill Thursday which would not allow voter email addresses to be included in state public records. Rep. Michelle Rehwinkel-Vasilinda explained why she was the only person to vote against the bill.

Tuesday was deadline to register to vote for the March 19 election. Alachua County Supervisor of Elections Pam Carpenter speaks about the number of registered voters and what they can expect at the polls next month.

Gainesville residents can return forms to the Supervisor of Elections Office before 5 p.m. or put them in the mail drop at the door by midnight. Forms returned by mail must be postmarked no later than Feb. 19 to be processed for the March 19 election.

The city elections are fast approaching. In order to vote on March 19, you must be a Gainesville resident and you must be registered to vote by Tuesday, Feb. 19.

State Sen. Jeff Clemens has filed a bill that would make voter registration at the DMV automatic.

Voters between the ages of 18 to 24 have been voting more in recent presidential elections, with an approximate 10 percent increase between 1996 and 2008. The statistic would be impressive if this same age group did not still possess the lowest voter turnout rate.
