Residents of District 9 will choose between Republican Sen. Keith Perry and Democrat Rodney Long to represent them in the state Legislature in the upcoming election Tuesday, Nov. 8.  Here is what voters need to know about the candidates and their viewpoints before they head to the polls.

A teacher is facing felony criminal charges after deputies say she had a loaded handgun in her car at Chiefland Elementary School. Paige Ehlers, a first-year teacher, sent two fourth-grade students to her car to get her medication Monday. The Levy County Sheriff’s Office said when the students went into the car they saw a gun and told school staff who contacted the school’s resource deputy. The school board said Ehlers was placed on administrative leave because having the loaded handgun is a violation of school policy. While it is legal for a person to carry a concealed firearm in a vehicle, school districts can have policies negating the law. Ehlers is facing charges of child endangerment. She was released from jail Tuesday and was not required to pay bond.

The race for the Alachua County District 1 commissioner race features a familiar matchup, as 42-year-old incumbent Republican Raemi Eagle-Glenn faces 61-year-old Democrat Mary Alford. Incumbent Kay Hatch and Mark Johnson are competing to gain a seat on Hernando County's school board in District 1.

The permitting phase is underway for construction to begin on a new preschool for visually impaired and blind students. The school will open in late spring of 2023 in Ocala and is part of the new expansion program of the Florida Center for the Blind. The preschool is funded by a $600,000 grant that was approved by the Marion County Commission in March of 2022 to purchase land.  Construction is expected to begin next month on land adjacent to the center. The school will eventually include a primary charter school.  It is the first phase of a three-phase project that intends to include a vocational center with dorms and job training facilities, and a youth education center.

Apprenticeship is an ancient practice that extends to a vast array of industries. Artists, technical workers and tradespeople all learn through immersive practice under the watchful eye of mentors in their chosen fields. No matter the profession, an organic, personalized approach to teaching is intertwined with trust as apprentices grow into full-fledged professionals.  For Jack Manfredi, an artist, the choice between college and apprenticeship was easy.
