The UF Community Coalition met to discuss initiatives and current programs regarding excessive and underage drinking. Some of the initiatives involve finding better ways to educate students on alcohol safety to reduce alcohol-related accidents and the use of fake IDs.

UF researcher Treavor Boyer has devised a system that could cut up to 20 percent of UF's water usage. The system involves reducing the amount of water needed to fertilize Florida Field — by swapping nitrogen fertilizer for human urine.

University of Florida student, Narayan Kulkarni, recently won Gio Peace's International Essay Contest. His essay, which shares his story on the treatment he received from peers after 9/11 due to his ethnicity, was chosen out of 8,943 essays from 148 countries. Kulkarni will receive his award in Japan this week.

Rood Emmanuel, a UF psychology sophomore, is using his personal struggles to help others. He founded Igniting Dreams, a nonprofit organization that provides mentorship and scholarships to students in Gainesville and Palm Beach County. The organization will award its first scholarship to a student in Palm Beach County this year.

Landon Howard Rogers, a freshman exploratory major, died Thursday morning at Percy Beard Track.

The University of Florida is hosting the national conference and 50th anniversary of the Society of Composers, Inc. from Nov. 12 to Nov. 14. Performers from all over the world, including UF faculty and alumni, played a total of 86 compositions.

An Alachua County Veterans Day Celebration gave residents the opportunity to honor those who served in the military. This year’s event was dedicated especially to Vietnam Veterans, as 2015 marks 50 years since the start of the Vietnam War.

The University of Florida was named a 2016 Military Friendly® School for its resources available to the nearly 1,000 veterans and active-duty military members enrolled as students.

The 2015 scores for the National Assessment of Education Progress exam (NAEP) are out, and the overall results were low for Florida and the nation as a whole. The scores for Florida's eighth graders in the national math exam were lower than two years ago. Despite these low scores, Duval County Public schools were ranked among the top districts in the U.S. in both reading and math.

UF School of Art and Art History Alumni team up for a joint show at University Gallery through Dec. 4. Artists Robert Fichter and Mernet Larsen will discuss their work during a public reception at the gallery from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Nov. 6.
