Hawthorne's plan to annex 1,200 of Plum Creek's acres will move forward without legal challenge from Alachua County.

The Alachua County Commission voted 4-1 to fund $12,000 to $15,000 worth of repairs for the current fairgrounds, much less than the proposed $1.2 million. If approved, the county plans to begin building a new fairgrounds facility as soon as January 2017.

The Fight for $15 and Union Rights movement rally to raise the minimum wage took place in over 20 cities in Florida Tuesday as part of National Day of Action. The local rally was organized by the Alachua County Labor Coalition and took place at Northwest 13th Street and West University Avenue.

After months of debate, 'Old Joe' will be moved from downtown Gainesville after the results of a 3-2 vote by the Alachua County Board of Commissioners. The statue has been in its current place since 1904.

Following the Charleston massacre, Alachua County residents call for the removal of a statue outside the Alachua County Administration Building that commemorates the Confederate dead. Supporters do not believe the statue is still relevant and hope that removing it will bring attention to the greater issue of white supremacy.

Newberry City Commissioner Tim Marden is proposing drawing a line through Alachua County to create a new county out of the western portion. The county, which would be called Springs County, would address the issue of some residents of smaller towns, like Newberry, feeling like they do not get adequate representation.
