Marion County Commissioners voted on Tuesday to put a 1 percent sales tax referendum on the March 2016 ballot. With many household incomes remaining stagnant, some Marion County residents are opposed to the idea of a tax increase.

With the demand for tourism increasing in Florida, a record of 100 million visitors is predicted this year. Hotel construction as well as airport and seaport renovations are among the increase in tourism.

All Levy County schools will soon require signs that warn sex offenders to stay away from schools without prior consent. Parents, law enforcement and the school board pushed for the signs in the county with the second-highest ratio of sex offenders.

Maria Gonzalez of Dunnellon Elementary School and Grisell Santiago of P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School received the Excellence in Education Award earlier this month. The annual award was sponsored by Volunteer Florida, the Florida Department of Education and the Executive Office of the Governor as a part of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Dunnellon is using funds from a Florida Department of Environmental Protection grant to finish a section of path that connects the Dunnellon and Blue Run trails. The trail will now fully support hiking, jogging, biking and rollerblading after its expected completion in December.

A flying car crashed on Tuesday in Marion County after going on an orientation flight. Two passengers suffered minor injuries but are currently safe.
