The UF Community Coalition met to discuss initiatives and current programs regarding excessive and underage drinking. Some of the initiatives involve finding better ways to educate students on alcohol safety to reduce alcohol-related accidents and the use of fake IDs.

Nextdoor is designed to allow neighbors to communicate. Police stations around the country are beginning partnerships to keep communities safe and involved.

UF is celebrating international students during the week of Nov. 16 through events, speakers, presentations and an awards ceremony. The International Education Week shines a spotlight on international students and educators at UF, helping to show the importance of a global campus.

The Fight for $15 and Union Rights movement rally to raise the minimum wage took place in over 20 cities in Florida Tuesday as part of National Day of Action. The local rally was organized by the Alachua County Labor Coalition and took place at Northwest 13th Street and West University Avenue.

Local dogs played, swam and strutted their stuff at the Ghoul and Drool Howl-O-Ween event in Gainesville on Saturday, October 24. The city's parks, recreation and cultural affairs department hosted the party for the pooches and their owners at the H. Spurgeon Cherry “Westside” Swimming Pool from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The Cade Museum held its ground-breaking ceremony Oct. 2 and is scheduled to open in 2017. The museum will celebrate the legacy of Robert Cade, inventor of Gatorade, in the 50th anniversary of the sports drink.

The city of Gainesville plans to renovate the restrooms at Kiwanis Challenge Park. Renovations are expected to begin July 13 and should be completed in the next 60 to 75 days.

Homeless travelers find comfort in Gainesville's community. The tent camp, Dignity Village, has provided a safe haven for them while traveling.

The Florida Champion Tree Register recognizes the largest tree in the state of each noninvasive species. It's the next step of recognition up from heritage tree status, like that of Bert, the bluff oak that has affected plans for the Innovation Nexus Building at UF.
