‘Let Trump Be Trump’: What Five Local Supporters Think About the President’s First Year

By

Jan. 20 marked President Donald Trump’s first year in office.

It also marked the first government shutdown since 2013. While Trump has signed major legislation like tax reform into law, appointed a new Supreme Court justice and slashed Obama-era regulations, his first-year approval numbers are the lowest of any modern president.

WUFT News sat down with five Gainesville-area voters who voted for him to ask them what they thought of the president’s first year.

The panel includes the following:

  • Sherrie McKnight, co-owner of Big Daddy Guns
  • Ron Thornton, a retired UF faculty member and part-time technology and political consultant
  • Hugh wise, a retired Oak Hammock resident
  • Tammy Prince, a nurse practitioner and chairwoman of the Alachua County Republican Party
  • Alex Nunner, a UF graduate student and former chairman of the UF College Republicans

  1. What is the point of asking the most strident, GOP-political-insiders about Trump? Their answers were predictable and this piece felt more like a 9 minute ad for the Donald J. Trump brand. If you want to provide real news, authentic information, ask some local farmers & ranchers who voted for Trump what they think about what the GOP is doing about immigration. And for that matter put on your panel some roofers or contractors who also rely on immigrant labor. Add to your panel others who voted for Trump only because they were Bernie Sanders supporters who refused to vote for Hillary Clinton. See what they think about the promises made on the campaign trail and how its worked out for them over the past year.

  2. What did you expect 5 Republicans to say? This is a nonsense interview.
