UF Students Write Letters To Congress To Show DACA Support

University of Florida students wrote letters to Congress on Tuesday to express their support for recipients of the now ended Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA.

Template letters were provided so that students needed to write in only their names and the name of the receiving representative or senator, but some students chose to personalize their messages.

Student and letter writer Noemi Reyes said DACA affects her sister and other family members. She said she wants members of Congress to realize that there are real people behind the letters.

"Every person deserves an opportunity to pursue their dreams," Reyes wrote in her letter. "I ask you to provide Dreamers with this opportunity. Give Dreamers the opportunity they deserve in the only home they've ever known."

Event organizer Mariana Castro said she will personally travel to Washington D.C. to deliver the 90 letters written Tuesday.

The letters are meant "to point out the fact that even though DACA ended, we are still trying to push for a solution, a permanent solution, for undocumented youth," Castro said.
