Gainesville Woman Arrested After Shooting Man At The Ridge

Update, Feb. 14 at 9:20 a.m. 

A Gainesville woman was arrested in connection with a shooting at The Ridge Apartments in Gainesville Monday.

Katherine Tonner, 24, called Gainesville Police Department around 12:30 p.m. Monday to report that she had shot Jose Ortiz III, 26, inside an apartment. When officers responded they found Ortiz dead with gunshot wounds to his head, according to a GPD statement. Preliminary investigations revealed that Ortiz and Tonner had recently ended a relationship and Ortiz was still residing at Tonner's apartment at The Ridge.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots around noon, according to GPD.

Tonner was located by Alachua County deputies in southwest Alachua County and she was transported to GPD headquarters and was arrested on charges for first-degree murder.

The investigation is ongoing. Tonner is being held in the Alachua County Jail with no bond.

On Monday at 12:30 p.m. Gainesville Police Department received a call from a woman who told police she had shot someone inside an apartment at The Ridge Apartments on SW 24th Avenue in Gainesville, according to a statement released by Gainesville Police Department.

The woman further told police that she was at a location outside of GPD's city limits, so Alachua County Deputies responded and located the woman. She is currently with police and is cooperating, according to the statement.

The condition of the victim is currently unavailable. The investigation is ongoing.
