WUFT News News and Public Media for North Central Florida from the University of Florida in Gainesville
The State of Florida School Crossing Guard of the Year award went to the Gainesville Police Department’s Sheila Payne of Glen Springs Elementary School on Friday.
“I really love the kids; that’s all I care about,” Payne said after receiving the award. “We all deserve an award being out there.”
Other crossing guards from GPD and the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office were recognized for their achievements in keeping children safe. At the event they were treated to a free breakfast and plaque.
