Brevard County getting more money for Indian River Lagoon

VIERA, Fla. (AP) — Brevard County is getting another $800,000 to help reduce muck in the Indian River Lagoon a month after a massive fish kill.

The Brevard County Commission on Tuesday approved an agreement with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for the additional funds.

The money is on top of the $20 million that has been allocated in the past two years for the Brevard County Muck Dredging Project. The muck comes from a brown algae bloom that is being blamed for the fish kill.

Some 65,000 pounds of fish have died in the lagoon. The algae isn't considered toxic to humans but has left behind clumps of rotted vegetation and depleted oxygen levels in those waters.
