BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) - President Obama recognized a Florida girl's science project during the White House Science Fair.
Fourteen-year-old Hannah Herbst created an ocean-energy probe prototype as a way of helping developing countries find a power source by using energy from ocean currents. According to the Associated Press, Obama stopped by her exhibit April 13 and pulled a string that showed electrical generation by a device using sea water.
The design was inspired by the ninth-grader's pen pal in Ethiopia. Herbst started the project after entering a science challenge from 3M. She was named America's 2015 Top Young Scientist, according to the press release.
