Missing Swimmers' Bodies Recovered

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) - The bodies of two men who vanished while swimming in the St. Johns River have been recovered, WJXT-TV reports.

In a police statement, the Green Cove Springs police say the bodies of Ahndray Edward Clay, 21, and Billy Joe Hammonds, 23, were recovered around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday.

One man jumped from the Spring Park Pier earlier that evening and, once in the water, began to struggle, said Kimberly Robinson, a Green Cove Springs police spokeswoman. The second man jumped in to help his friend, Robinson said.

After going under, neither man resurfaced.

The water that night was rough, but Robinson couldn't say whether that was a it might have been a factor in the accident.
