Marion County Deputy Shot In Gas-Station Standoff

UPDATE, 1:03 p.m.: The shooting suspect, still unnamed, has been pronounced dead, according to Marion County Sheriff Chris Blair. Sgt. Trammell has been released from the hospital.

"Any time there is loss of life, it is an extremely sensitive, important manner," Blair said in a video released to the press. "We ask for the citizens' patience during this investigation."

Blair said he has asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to launch an independent investigation of the shooting.

ORIGINAL STORY: A Marion County sheriff’s deputy and an unidentified man were injured Wednesday evening in a standoff in Ocala.

Patrol Sgt. Daniel Trammell was shot in the leg and is in stable condition, and the subject, whose identity hasn't yet been released, is in critical condition, according to a Marion County Sheriff’s Office press release.

The shooting occurred when deputies went to the Marathon/Kangaroo gas station at 1940 SE 58th Ave. because an armed subject was seen there getting in and out of a vehicle with two handguns, according to the release.

When deputies arrived, the man raised one of the handguns to his head. After deputies gave him multiple commands to put down the weapons, the suspect pointed the other handgun towards the deputies and began firing at them, according to the release.

Deputies returned fire, and during the standoff, Trammell was hit in the leg. The man was also shot, and both were transported to the hospital.
