Update 5 a.m., June 19: A double shooting at an apartment complex in Gainesville ended after nearly a 4-hour active police response with the suspect apparently taking his own life.

Gainesville Police Department has identified the suspected shooter as Lorenzo Fitzpatrick, 48. Officers found Fitzpatrick in an apartment at the Spanish Trace Apartments around 6:50 p.m. Wednesday with a handgun lying nearby, according to police reports.

The incident began shortly after 3 p.m. when a GPD officer responded to the complex, at 3500 Windmeadows Blvd., on a noise complaint. Police spokesman Ben Tobias said Officer Sandy Teasley was speaking with residents when he heard shots coming from the direction of apartment 11 on the first floor.

Teasley descended from the second floor of the complex, according to a police report, to find two victims with gunshot wounds running from the apartment. The victims were evacuated to the adjacent Oaks Pawn to be treated, which resulted in some reported rumors of a second shooting that evening.

Police identified the victims as Desiree Reyes, 21, and Bruce Cheeves, 24. They were transported to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

GPD units, in coordination with the Alachua County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Marshals office in Florida, flooded the complex causing numerous social media and text alerts both from GPD and the UF Alert system. Traffic around the intersection of 34th Street and Windmeadows Blvd., behind Butler Plaza, was disrupted during the incident.

Update 7 p.m., June 18: GPD has reported the suspect has been found dead in an apartment with a handgun next to him. Updates as they become available.
