A high tech alert system helped Virginia Tech officials lock down the campus amid reports of a fatal shooting yesterday. University of Florida Police Department Assistant Director Brad Barber says a similar system would alert UF.

He says there are also alarms inside classroom buildings that would instantly let students know if there was a major safety threat on campus. A Virginia Tech police officer was fatally shot yesterday by a man who approached his car while the officer was on a traffic stop. The shooter fled and later shot himself. Barber says traffic stops are one of the most dangerous tasks a police officer takes on because of the uncertainty behind all people involved.
