A decorated rock remembering the victims of the August 2019 mass shooting rests at a memorial site in El Paso, Texas, on Wednesday. The defendant in the deaths of 23 people pleaded guilty to federal hate crime and weapons charges.

Sentencing is not scheduled until later this year, but the U.S. government had previously announced it wouldn’t seek the death penalty.
