Gainesville Police issued 10 citations in the first month of Florida’s texting while driving ban. Drivers ages 18 to 25 have received more than half of the 10 citations, said Ben Tobias, Gainesville Police Department spokesperson.

The “Florida Ban on Texting While Driving Law” will become effective Oct. 1. Some North Florida law enforcement officials, however, already believe the law will be ineffective.

The Florida Senate Transportation Committee unanimously approved a bill that would ban texting and driving Wednesday. Florida is one of five states that doesn’t outlaw texting while driving.

In a recent study published by AAA, drivers reported to using cellphones in the car despite knowing of the safety risks involved. Florida is one of the few states that does not ban texting and driving and a AAA director said drivers are often overconfident in their texting and driving habits.
