Alachua County Fire Rescue Station 25 will be the first county building in Hawthorne to be outfitted with solar panels. The station is one of 24 buildings determined viable for the county’s solar panel initiative, which seeks to cut energy consumption.

Alachua County is part of a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to make solar panels more accessible to residents. The county will use its share of the $1.575 million grant to create a system on its website to help residents obtain solar panel installation permits.
