Gainesville residents and businesses can expect increased energy costs starting Wednesday. The increase comes despite Gainesville Regional Utility lowering its base rates and cutting fixed costs.

Gainesville Regional Utilities is facing lower fines for two sewage spills over the summer. Compared to a 140,000-gallon spill in 2005 that resulted in a $10,000 fine, GRU is being fined $7,750 for one sewage spill of nearly 1 million gallons and another of 58,000 gallons.
