American Airlines and US Airways announced a $11 billion merger on Thursday, and Gainesville businesses as well as the airport are unsure as to what the effects on the local economy will be. American Airlines filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2011 and the merger still waits approval from the bankruptcy courts.
The Gainesville Regional Airport is conducting a survey to garner support for a direct flight to New York City.
