University of Florida researchers have begun developing mouthguards aimed at monitoring player vitals, including concussions, dehydration and heat stroke. The mouthguards are in the prototype phase, and researchers hope to begin testing next year.
Between 1.6 and 3.8 million Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) are diagnosed each year in the United States, most of which are concussions. Football is the leading cause of TBIs according to the CDC. Some area high schools are using technology to help battle brain trauma on the field.
An organization that supports brain research has dubbed this week Brain Awareness Week. There will be activities each weekday afternoon on the University of Florida campus put on by the UF Neuroscience Club.
