On Monday, Florida’s marriage licenses and certificate applications recognized gay marriage by changing the terms “bride” and “groom” to the gender-neutral term “spouse.” While this is another victory for the LGBT community, they still face unresolved issues regarding other legal documents, such as birth certificates.
Many same-sex couples celebrated the lifting of Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage last month. Others, however, lamented the decision by several counties’ clerks of court to stop all marriage ceremonies, regardless of the couples’ orientations.
The Alachua County Clerk of Court Ancient Records Project was awarded a preservation award. The project, which started about 15 years ago, has preserved nearly 200 years of history so far.
