Florida Cyclists Deaths Highest in Nation, New Precautions Taken

Despite Alachua County’s bike-friendly reputation, the area was listed as one of the top 15 high-priority counties in Florida for injuries and fatalities, according to CDC report.

The city of Gainesville and the Florida Department of Transportation are proposing new programs to cut down on bicycle deaths and improve safety conditions for cyclists and pedestrians. The Centers for Disease Control recently published a report that shows Florida had the highest bicycle deaths rate in the country from 2008-2012.

FDOT Cuts Funding For Active Streets

The FDOT cut funding for Gainesville's Active Streets event, which offers free pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly activities twice per year. The organization and its supporters are trying to overturn the decision and look for new ways to fund the event.
