As SB 186 goes into effect Wednesday, Gainesville brewers are preparing to celebrate. Breweries expect the 64-ounce growlers to attract people from outside the state that will come and patronize Florida’s growing craft beer industry.
Gov. Scott has signed a bill into law that will allow the sale of 64 ounce refillable bill containers known as growlers. This makes Florida the 48th state to allow this size growler to be sold.
Swamp Head Brewery has moved to a new location and installed solar panels, becoming the first solar-powered brewery in Florida. Their goal has always been to become more sustainable, and they have taken other initiatives such as buying land for preservation and aiding in conservation efforts to do so.
While other beer consumers want nothing to do with their cans once they’re empty, a small but growing number of locals keep the containers as part of their personal beer can collections. Some of the cans, which were sold in the early to mid-20th century, can be worth hundreds of dollars.
Sixty-four-ounce growlers, or beer containers, may have to wait to be available to locals after officials refuse to put the bill for the growlers (SB 1344) on the agenda for the Florida House of Representatives.
