Bottom of the barrel: Members of Congress honesty ratings – Amid a stalled effort on Capitol Hill to combat the pending fiscal cliff, Americans said they don’t trust their congressmen. More than half of Americans said in a new poll that lawmakers have low or very low ethical standards. Only 10 percent said elected officials have high or very high ethics. Of the 22 professions measured, nurses topped the list. Car salespeople were second-to-last in least-trusted professionals. CNN
Fatal vehicles crashes down in Florida, motorcyclist and bicyclist deaths rise – Deadly vehicle crashes in Florida fell about 2 percent in 2011, but motorcycle and bicycle fatalities rose sharply. Deaths of motorcyclists and passengers rose from 383 to 451. Bicyclist deaths more than doubled, from 76 to 120. Alcohol was suspected in 11 percent more crashes in 2011 than in 2010. Tampa Bay Times
SMS Celebrates 20th Anniversary – The text message turned 20 today. On Dec. 3, 1992, Neil Papworth texted “Merry Christmas” to a Vodafone employee from across town in London. The next year, Nokia introduced the first mobile phone from which users could text. Globally, SMS texting traffic is still growing. In 2011, 7.4 trillion texts were sent.
