According to reports, lawyers are on track to raise $5.5 million to keep justices on the court amid the November retention campaign. Justices Hear Case on Deportation Warnings – A 2010 Supreme Court ruling decreed criminal defense lawyers must warn clients if a guilty plea could result in deportation, a call that Justice Samuel Alito predicted would “lead to much confusion and needless litigation.” Now justices are trying to clear up whether the ruling should apply retroactively to those whose convictions were finalized before the initial ruling.
