Obama Signals He’d Let Cuts Stand to Avoid U.S. Shutdown – President Obama and Congressional leaders had a White House meeting Friday. They emerged without resolution to the budget impasse, meaning the spending cuts that take effect Friday could remain in place for weeks, maybe months. The New York Times
Michigan to Appoint Emergency Manager for Detroit – It was announced Friday that the city of Detroit will be appointed an emergency manager to lead it out of financial disaster. The manager will be appointed by the state and will be selected later this month. The manager would ultimately wield powers aimed at swiftly turning around the municipal government’s dire circumstances. The New York Times
‘Herd of Chihuahuas’ need home – Nine Chihuahua puppies were left at Dale Kaplan-Stein’s Northwood Oaks Veterinary Hospital. Kaplan-Stein said the abandoned dogs are in relatively good shape but need homes. The Gainesville Sun
Man sucked into rubble as sinkhole opens under Seffner home – Hopes of rescuing a Seffner resident sucked into a sinkhole dim Friday. Jeffrey Bush, 36, was pulled into the sinkhole along with his bed and dresser. The sinkhole opened late Thursday afternoon beneath one of four bedrooms in a one-story home at 240 Faithway Drive.
