Two UF systems breached in international hacking Monday – Hundreds of thousands of email addresses, passwords, IDs and names of students and faculty members were taken from more than 100 universities worldwide as part of a hacking sweep by an anonymous group called Team GhostShell. UF’s College of Medicine and the Contracts and Grants Department were affected. The university says it is unsure at this time what exact data has been taken in the sweep, though. Florida’s voter purge can continue, judge rules - A federal judge in Ft. Lauderdale ruled Thursday that the state-wide voter purge can continue, saying federal law doesn’t prohibit the state from removing voters who weren’t lawfully eligible to register in the first place. Databases have flagged 198 voters as potential noncitizens and sent names to county elections supervisors to review. The Miami Herald
Florida Supreme Court justices seem to back advance fee for nuke plants – The Florida Supreme Court will let stand a law that lets utilities to charge customers in advance for construction of nuclear plants. The Southern Alliance for Clean Energy filed a suit, claiming the statute is ambiguous and could lead to customers having to pay for plants that could never be built or become too costly. Apple remembers Steve Jobs with video – The world has been without Steve Jobs for one year now, and the company’s homepage is paying homage today to the beloved co-founder of Apple, who died last year of cancer at 56. The Washington Post
Unemployment rate falls to 7.8% – President Barack Obama may have a new number to point to when debating Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney: 7.8 That’s where the unemployment rate stands after September — its lowest percentage since January 2009, according to the Labor Department.
