Harlem Globetrotters player speaks to area school about bullying prevention

“Slick” Willie Shaw of the Harlem Globetrotters spoke to the Queen of Peace Catholic Academy Wednesday about the ABCs of bullying prevention. Shaw also did an appearance at another local school and will be participating in the Globetrotters game in the Stephen C. O’Connell Center next week.

State pension-plan bill sparks debate

Tensions are rising between politicians and opponents of a newly proposed pension plan for state employees. A House subcommittee has approved a bill that will change the pension plan for state employees to a 401(k)-style plan, instead of the fixed amount of money currently being put into retirement funds.

Public consulted in species conservation

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is asking for public input on a series of drafts to preserve about two dozen native wildlife species. The drafts are available online through March 13.

Gov. Rick Scott proposes $2,500 pay raise for teachers

Gov. Rick Scott proposed a $2,500 pay raise for full-time teachers in a speech at Ocoee Middle School in Orlando. His proposal must be approved by state legislature and comes after another proposal to increase K-12 funding.

Marion County reaches agreement on new tech park
