Florida purchases land to protect state springs

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection purchased about 600 acres of land to protect Florida springs, but Florida Springs Institute Director Bob Knight said there is more to be done.
Marijuana raid on wheelchair-bound woman sparks controversy

Controversy remains after Manatee County Sheriff’s Office seized 23 marijuana plants Monday from the home of Cathy Jordan, a wheelchair-bound woman. Jordan is the namesake of a piece of legislation aiming to decriminalize the herb for medicinal purposes, called the Cathy Jordan Medical Cannabis Act.
Gang member arrested for marijuana and weapons charges in Gainesville

Gainesville Police arrested a Bloods gang member for possession of marijuana and carrying a concealed weapon.
Network receives funds to support violence prevention

The Verizon Foundation awarded $20,000 to Peaceful Paths Domestic Abuse Network, a certified domestic abuse network that serves survivors of domestic violence in Alachua, Bradford and Union counties. The network will use the money to support educational programs and social marketing campaigns.

Peaceful Paths, a shelter for victims of domestic violence, held a vigil in downtown Gainesville Thursday in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
