TALLAHASSEE — Florida's Republican-controlled Legislature is officially picking new leaders.

The Legislature meets Tuesday for one-day session to swear in new members after elections that saw all 160 seats up for grabs. Legislators will also vote to install Rep. Richard Corcoran as the next House speaker and Sen. Joe Negron as the next Senate president.

Both Corcoran and Negron are promising to enact sweeping changes when legislators hold their 60-day regular session in March.

Negron wants to boost money to universities and do more to battle water pollution that's caused toxic algae blooms along the state's two coastlines.

Corcoran will ask the House to adopt new restrictions on lobbyists, including a ban on lobbyists using emails or text messages to reach out to legislators when they are about to vote.
