Protestors gathered in Gainesville to raise awareness about the meat industry for the World Day for Farmed Animals.

Animal activists gathered with signs outside the University of Florida Meat Science Lab Thursday morning and then again later on SW 23rd Street near the University of Florida Beef Teaching Unit.

Manny Rutinel, a microbiology student at the University of Florida and member of the Student Animal Alliance, joined in on the protest.

“This is a peaceful demonstration to hopefully spread the message… on what actually happens over here, and hopefully some people will change their lifestyle and hopefully go vegan,” Rutinel said.

The World Day for Farmed Animals, which started in 1983, occurs every year on, or near, Oct. 2 to honor the birth of Mahatma Gandhi who was an advocate for non-violence against animals.
