In the past few years, efforts to increase awareness of breast cancer have increased. But for one group, Hispanic women in the United States, where about ten percent have a probability of developing invasive breast cancer, additional programs are being started. While Hispanic women have a lower incidence rate for breast cancer than whites, blacks and asians, they have a less favorable prognosis because of delayed treatment. As Florida’s 89.1 WUFT-FM’s Stephanie Bechara reports, “Gainesville’s Rural Women’s Health Project” wishes to address cancer disparities among Latinas in north central Florida.
