The Florida Department of State Division of Elections reported as of 8:58 p.m. that 59.42 percent of more than 5 million ballots voted to reject Amendment 12. Votes to pass it tallied at 40.58 percent.
This proposal would change how a student representative is selected for the Board of Governors, the body that oversees the Florida university system. Currently, the chair of the private organization Florida Student Association becomes the representative.
The amendment, if passed, would mandate that the Board of Governors appoints the new student representative from one of the 11 universities’ Student Body presidents.
Sixty percent of votes cast are required for a Florida state constitution amendment to pass.
